Dating back to 1883, Knesset Eliyahoo Synagogue is the worship place of Mumbai's Bagdadi and Bene Israeli Jewish communities. It is located on Fort Street between
Colaba and Fort in
Greater Mumbai District. The synagogue was built by Jaboc Elias Sassoon and his brothers to commemorate their father.
This three-storied sky blue color building is built in colonial architecture. It looks like a beautiful wedding cake. Also called Fort Jewish Synagogue, it is decorated with wide wooden staircases, decorative floor tiles and fine stained-glass windows. The inside of the building is reminiscent of a colonial church, with rustic wooden balustrades, wooden pillars and rich chandeliers. Worships are conducted here every Friday evening and Saturday morning. Non-Jewish visitors can visit the synagogue at other times. Jehangir Art Gallery, Taj Mahal Hotel and Bombay's booming stock exchange are nearby.
Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is the nearest airport.
