Kinnaur Valley is a scenic and sparsely populated valley, situated close to the Indo–Tibetan border in the Northern
Himalayas of
Himachal Pradesh. This beautiful valley was forbidden even to the Indians till 1993. This 1000 ft deep lower valley of Spiti and the Sutlej gorge is carved out by the icy waters of the
Sutlej River.
The landscape comprises lush green orchards of the Sangla valley to the barren beauty of the Hangrang valley. The land is suitable for growing fruits and some of the best apples, almonds, walnut, peaches and apricots are cultivated here. Besides the famous chilgozas (pine nut), Kinnaur is more famous for its local wine.
The Kinnaur Kailash Range – the abode of Lord Shiva, is situated to the eastern side of the valley.
