Keoladeo Ghana National Park, one of the finest water bird sanctuaries in the world is situated to the east of
Rajasthan, 176 km from
Delhi, and 50 km from
Agra. It was created in the 19th century on a 28 sq km lake and wet land, by the
Maharaja of Bharatpur. It was then a wild fowl shooting preserve. This park is also known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary and serves as one of the two wintering grounds for the endangered Siberian cranes.
This place is best suited for bird watching, as the park holds more than 300 species of avian population. Around the bird sanctuary there is a forest which has sambar, chital, nilgai and hyena. The park is open throughout the year and the breeding season is from August through October. Migrant birds arrive here from October to February. Forest rest-houses offer accommodation. Bharatpur is the nearest town. The nearest airport is Agra Civil Enclaves.
