Kati Bihu, also known as Kangali Bihu, is the festival of the poor celebrated by the Assamese people. It is conducted on the last day of Ashwin (September-October). At this time the paddy seedlings begin to grow.
In the evenings, offerings are made to the Tulsi plant in the courtyard. Oil lamps are lighted at the root of this sacred plant for the entire month. Puja's are offered to God for improved yield of crops.
After this ceremonial lighting of lamps, people visit each other’s house and exchange greetings and sweets.
