Katha is a religious discourse based on the preaching of the Sikh gurus. It is an integral part of any Sikh religious ceremony. This discourse is a medium through which the people can gain the knowledge about
Sikhism.
The tradition of Katha was initiated by Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. He used to preach his followers to give them an insight into the new religion. The successive gurus carried his practice forward. By listening to the religious discourse, spiritual thinking arises in a person and the preachings of the gurus acts as a guide. It helps in getting rid of evil thoughts from the mind.
Apart from the spiritual thoughts, a Katha recital also contains episodes from the Sikh history. These historical chapters are meant to keep Sikh people in touch with their origin and give them a glimpse of the sacrifices endured by their ancestors to establish their religion.
