Karzok Gompa is an ancient monastery at
Karzok, the main human settlement in
Rupshu region, in
Leh District of
Jammu and Kashmir. Karzok lies on the trade route from Lahaul to western Tibet.
Located at the highest part of the Chanthang Plateau that comes under the restricted areas of Ladakh region, this monastery was built in 1850 over an old one which was destroyed during the Dogra invasion. The specialty of this gompa is that it is inhabited predominantly by women, who often spend their day making beautiful garments for themselves.
Karzok Gompa can be reached from Sarchu and Tso Moriri.
