Karikkat Temple Complex

Karikkat Temple Complex is a group of highly revered shrines situated at Karikkat village near Manjeri in Malappuram District of Kerala. This temple complex is home to three temples, two of Subramania and one of Lord Ayyappa.

The most famous temple is the Ayyappa Temple. Dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, the temple is believed to have been built during the 10th century. The annual festival conducted in September-October attracts many pilgrims. Tharipanam, made by using crushed fried rice, jaggery and coconut, is the main offering to Lord Ayyappa.

The other temple enshrines Lord Subramania, presiding over knowledge, as the main deity. Hindu mythology underlines that Lord Subramania is the son of Lord Shiva (absolute reality) and Goddess Parvati (transcendent reality). Lord Subramania is also known as Shanmukha, Guha, Shadanaana, Skanda and Kartikeya.

There are countless inscriptions on the temple walls which are pointers to a bygone era and culture. The sculptures and carvings of the temple are done in Keralite style of architecture.

Calicut Airport is the nearest airport. Tirur Railway Station serves this area. Taxis and autorikshaws are available from Manjeri to Karikkat.
