Karappankadu is 30 km from Mannargudi. It lies in
Pattukkottai taluk of
Thanjavur District.
Legend says that, six centuries ago, a group of Vaishnavite scholars from Kanchipuram were on a pilgrimage to Thiruppullani (Darbhasayanam). While they were returning to Kanchipuram, they spent a night in the forest near Pattukkottai, which was ruled by a chieftain, Karuppa Thevan. Impressed by the activities of the scholars, Karuppa Thevan requested them to stay there permanently. The scholars agreed upon his request and they named the village after him, as Karuppankadu, which later became Karappankadu. It is home for a temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Karuppankadu can be reached by traveling on the Mannargudi-Pattukkottai bus route.
