Kapisthalam, in
Thanjavur District, is situated 3 km from Papanasam on the
Thanjavur-
Kumbakonam road via Tiruvaiyaru. It rests between the
Kollidam and
Cauvery rivers. This place is depicted in ‘Naanmukan Thiruvanthathi’, a composition of the famous Tamil poet Azhwar.
Prime attraction is a temple dedicated to
Lord Vishnu. The lord of Kapisthalam is believed to be the remover of sins (Paapa Vimochakatvam). Gajendra Pushkarni is the holy water source present here. The Paapa Vimochakatvam and the holy water are associated with a legend of the Lord saving an elephant from the hands of death. Kapisthalam (Kapi means monkey) got its name, as the Lord gave
darshan to
Hanuman at this place.
