Kantha is a traditional embroidered quilt originating from
West Bengal. It is one of the famous folk handicrafts of this state. Old clothes and fabrics are used in making of the quilt. Embroidery is applied to give it a delicate touch. The style of embroidery used is the ‘Dorukha’.
Black, deep blue and red, which symbolizes the earth, sky and space are the colors used. The design schemes mainly depict gems, chariots, floral patterns and creepers. Everyday objects like combs, mirrors and umbrellas are also included. Running stitch is the commonly used stitch in kantha.
