Kanam is a serene hamlet situated in the
Kinnaur District of
Himachal Pradesh. This monastic village dates back to the time of Rinchensang-po, the founder of
Tabo monastery. The name Kanam literally means the place of Kangyur. During the eleventh century the village was rich in scriptural learning.
Kanam is located on the India-Tibet road and has seven Buddhist monasteries and temples of various dimensions. Kangyur-tangyur, a famous Tibetan Library, is a major landmark.
The main religious observances in this village include Zinshok, Torgya, Tona, Tibangama, Kutimf and Namgang. Losar Festival (New Year Day), Kangyur-zalmo, Menthako, Khwakeha, and Sherkan are the main fairs held.
Pooh, on the National Highway 22, is another great Buddhist center near Kanam. Shimla Railway Station and Shimla Airport are the nearest railhead and airport respectively.
