Kammasandra is located in Kolar District of Karnataka. It lies on the outskirts of Kolar Gold Fields and is about 87 km east of Bangalore, the state capital. Kammasandra is also known as Kotilingeswara, which literally means 'city of ten million lingas.'
Kammasandra finds a mention in the Ramayana. It is one among the numerous villages where the horse of Lord Ram wandered during the Ashwamedha Yajna (horse sacrifice). In Puranas, it is a place where an important ceremony was conducted by Dakshabrahma, father of Parvati.
