Kali Attam is a folk dance performed by both men and women during festivals, auspicious days and weddings, in
Tamil Nadu. It is performed with ‘kols’ (sticks) and the dancers used to wear ankle-bells, while no special dress or make up are used.
Kali means joy or fun; Kali Attam has different names in different regions of the country. In Andhra Pradesh, it is known by the name Kolatam.
Kali Attam is a lively combination of pleasing rhythmic movements and songs with the accompaniment of music. The dancers hold sticks one foot length in each hand which are beaten to make a sharp, rasping sound as the dance proceeds with unique steps, twisting and turning.
In ancient days, the sticks were beautifully painted and decorated with brass rings and bells.
