Kalanaur is located on the bank of Rivulet Kiran, near
Gurdaspur in
Gurdaspur District. It is an ancient town which had attained the peak of its glory during the reign of the famous Mughal emperor,
Akbar. Takhat-i-akbari at Kalanaur is actually a masonry platform on which Akbar the Great was coronated on Feb 14,1556. Akbari Masjid close by is also worth visiting. The anarchy and chaos that prevailed after the decline of the
Mughal Empire, coupled with the ravages of the marauding waters of the Kiran has, over the years, dimmed the significance of the town.
Kalanaur is well known for its famous Shiva Temple that attracts thousands of devotees on the day of Shivratri.
