Kaiga Atomic Power Station, formerly known as Kaiga Atomic Power Project, is located at
Kaiga in
Uttara Kannada District. Started commercial operation in 2000, It serves India's southern grid and provides power to five states (
Karnataka,
Andhra Pradesh,
Tamil Nadu,
Kerala and
Pondicherry). The facilities fall under the direction of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL),
Mumbai.
The Power Station uses natural uranium as fuel and heavy water as moderator and coolant. Kaiga is about 60 km from Karwar.
