Kabigaan, a folk music, is popular in the rural areas of
West Bengal. These songs written and composed by Kobials are sung mainly on festive occasions.
The unique feature of Kabigaan is that the folk poets not only build their lyrical masterpieces on the spot confronting their rivals but also compose musical scores for them on the fly as they recite their verses. The verses contain linguistic elements including symbolic embellishments, riddles and questions. The songs are full of emotion, romanticism and wisdom.
Kabigaan is taken from events, materials and tidbits of life. The characters from great epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharata are also referred in the song. Many Kabigaans has already made a legendary mark on the Bengali heritage.
