K R Gauri, popularly known as Gauri Amma, has the unique achievement of having completed 50 years as a legislator in Kerala Assembly. As a prominent figure in the Communist movement in
Kerala, she has proved herself as an efficient administrator while remaining an astute politician. Born at Pattanakad, in
Alappuzha District, she had her schooling at Thiroor and
Cherthala. After graduation, she obtained her law degree from Law College,
Ernakulam.
K R Gauri started her public life through trade union and peasant movements, and was elected to the Travancore Council of Legislative Assembly in the years 1952 and 1954 with a vast majority. In 1957 she became the Revenue Minister in the first EMS ministry. She has functioned as a minister, in five different ministries under three Chief Ministers. At present she is a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly representing
Aroor constituency in Alappuzha district.
