Jhansi District in
Uttar Pradesh covers an area of 5,024 sq km with a population of 1.8 million. The Pahunj and
Betwa are important rivers. Jhansi was a part of certain regions namely Chedi Rashtra, Jejak Bhukit, Jajhoti and
Bundelkhand. It was a stronghold of the Chandela kings, when it had the name Balwant Nagar. This place lost its significance in the 11th century but rose again to power in the 17th century under the able Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha.
