Jamat Khana is a beautiful red sandstone building on the eastern side of Salim Chishti’s Tomb at
Fatehpur Sikri. The square building is placed on a platform and enclosed by perforated screens. Its unique feature is the 36-small-domed kiosks around the central dome on the roof.
It was once used as an assembly hall where the most distinguished disciples of Sheikh Salim Chishti (famous saint) carried out religious and devotional practices. Sheikh Haji Hussain used to organize religious functions at the assembly hall. His grave can be seen in the south-west corner.
There are seven bays on each facade. The entrance door is in the middle of the center facade and has carved designs. Verandah is divided into compartments by stone screened enclosures, where graves of disciples of Sheikh Salim Chishti are found. It has a central chamber which houses the grave of Islam Khan (grand son of Sheikh Salim and governor of Bengal).
There are 24 gravestones, most of them without names. Men’s gravestone is identified by a pen box or a turban whereas women by a flat board with a handle called ‘takhti.’ Also, grave of disciples of Sheikh Salim Chishti are found on a platform popularly known as ‘yaran chabutra’ (friends platform) outside the tomb.
