Jama Masjid, overlooking the
Agra Fort, was built in 1648 by
Shah Jahan. It stands on a high plinth and is approached by stairs and has five arched entrances to the courtyard. It is crowned by three large sandstone domes with zigzag bands of marble. The main prayer wall has panels of beautifully inlaid sandstone similar to those seen at the main gateway of the
Taj Mahal. Paintings, inlaid stones, carvings and glazed tiles are the other noteworthy aspects in the mosque.
