Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is located in
Jalpaiguri District of
West Bengal and is home to the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros.
Occupying an area of about 215 sq km, it is covered with woods, grassland, swamps and streams. Sambar, tiger, leopard, wild elephant, pig,
hog deer, barking deer,
hispid hare, hogbadger, peacock, jungle fowl, crested eagle, Pallas’s fishing eagle, shikra and quail are some of the other animals and birds spotted here.
The primitive Toto tribe has their home in Totopara Village, which lies north of the sanctuary. The customs and culture of the tribe are of great anthropological interest.
Jaldapara is open from November to the end of April, with March being the best month to view animals. The park is closed to visitors during the rainy season (June to September).
Nearest airport is at Siliguri. Birpara Railway Station and Hasimara Railway Station are 20 km away from the sanctuary. The
National Highway 31 passes through the middle of the sanctuary.
Entry point to the sanctuary is at
Madarihat, which is 214 km from Siliguri. By Road, the best route is Darjeeling - Siliguri - Sevoke - Bagrakot - Mall -
Chalsa -
Nagrakata- Binaguri - Madarihat ( 214 km).
