Jalandhar Cantonment, one of the oldest cantonments in India, is situated in
Jalandhar, which is 146 km from
Chandigarh. Before independence, the main scope of this Cantonment was only to quench the disturbance from the neighboring states thus maintaining peace and order. Today, it has great importance because of its nearness to the Pakistan border.
The Military Hospital situated here is one of the biggest hospitals in the state and the Cantonment Board Schools have taken the pride in offering the maximum number of hockey players for the country. The oldest building of Jalandhar houses one of the headquarters of a Corp, which stands with a majestic look on the
Grand Trunk Road. It has three Kendriya Vidyalayas and one Army School.
The Cantonment has a bazaar known as Sadar Bazar and two well-stocked canteens (shopping centers) to cater to the needs of the people residing there. It also has Military Dairy Farm, which spreads, over an area of 650 acres. The Class I airfield at
Adampur is 19 km away from the Cantonment which is linked by rail and road. The other facilities include an Olympic size swimming pool, a flying club and golf course. It also hosts an annual flower show.
An 800-year-old Imam Nasir Mosque, Devi Talab Mandir and two-century-old
Jama Masjid are the nearby tourist attractions. The Cantonment is 2 km from the Cantonment Railway Station and 5 km from the City Railway Station. The nearest airport is at Amritsar, 90 km away. Jalandhar Cantonment is on the Grand Trunk Road, which helps in its accessibility with the major places around.
