Jakai is a shovel-like fishing device used in
Assam. It is weaved from the strips of a bamboo locally known as ‘jati’ (Bambusa tulda). The strips are known by the name ‘dai.’
The fishermen either drag the Jakai through the water or simply place it in the water bed. The small fishes agitated by the fishermen’s approach, sometimes move about and take shelter in the fishing device. These fishes are simply shoveled out of the water.
