Jagar, believed to be the ancestor of the modern Marathi theater, is one of the earliest forms of folk dramas of
Goa. Perani Jagar and Gawda Jagar are the two important forms of Jagar, of which the former is performed by the Hindu Perani community and the latter by the Christian Gawda community. Perani Jagar deals with esoteric themes such as creation of universe and the Gawda Jagar with the traditional aspects of Goan village life.
