Jagannath Das was a Sanskrit scholar and writer of great repute in
Orissa, during to the 16th century. He is known for the translation of the
Bhagavad Gita into
Oriya. This work of translation commands the same respect and reverence as the original holy text. Its verses are recited during the final rites of a dead person, in Orissa.
Jagannath Das was a philosopher and a supporter of the Vaishnava movement in Orissa. He earned the title ‘Atibadi’ (The Great) because of his knowledge and philosophy. His noted Sanskrit works include ‘Krushnabhakti Kalpalata Upasana Sataka’, ‘Niladri Sataka’ and ‘Niyaaguptamala’.
