Isko, located in the north-eastern corner of Karanpura Valley, is a densely forested village with archeological importance. Situated around 35 km from
Hazaribagh, this picturesque place is inhabited by the
Munda tribe.
Lower palaeolithic deposits and deep underground caves inhabited by humans during the ice ages are found here. The village has one of the richest collections of the middle palaeolithic stone tools in South Asia. Acheulian hand axes, borers, scrapers, strippers and hammerstones are among the excavated items.
The Isko River flows through the village, and Marwateri Cave is one among the prime attractions. The well-known Isko rock painting, also called Kohbara, is about 1 km south-west of the Marwateri Cave.
Hazaribagh Road Railway Station and Ranchi Airport are the nearest rail junction and airport respectively.
