Iraniyur Temple is a highly revered shrine located about 25 km from
Karaikudi, in
Sivagangai District of
Tamil Nadu. The temple lies on the
Pillaiyarpatti road, near
Keelasevalpatti. Built in 714 AD, it is one of the Nagarathar temples in the state. The temple enshrines Arulmigu Atkondanathar as the presiding deity along with his divine consort Sivapurandevi.
Iraniyur Temple boasts about 50 bronze artifacts, which include a Nataraja dating back to 12th -13th century period, a 5-metal alloy from the 17th century, a dozen from the 19th century and the remaining from the 20th century. The Lakshmi mandapam of the temple is garnished with intricate paintings. The temple also boasts paintings done in the Vijayanagara style during the first renovation. Some paintings done in the 1940s during the second renovation displays the Raja Ravi Varma influence.
