Established in 1962, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in
Pune is an autonomous institution under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The institute is recognized by several universities as a center of advanced research for carrying out research leading to the award of Master of Science and Ph D degrees in atmospheric sciences.
The institute functions as a national center for basic and advanced research in the field of meteorology. The main research focuses on forecasting, climatology and hydrometeorology, physical meteorology, land surface processes studies, theoretical studies and climate and global modeling. It is equipped with computing facilities, experimental laboratories with data acquisition systems and a library.
Some of its achievements are development of different weather forecasting models on different scales, documentation of the tele-connections of the Indian rainfall with EI Nino events, and construction of long homogeneous series of monsoon rainfall and surface air temperature to study their spatial and temporal variability and regional climate change.
