Ilayangudi is a town in
Sivagangai District of
Tamil Nadu. The roots of this town have been influenced by different historical, religious, social and economical factors. Its history dates back to 3rd and 2nd century BC, the golden era of
Jainism and
Buddhism in the state. The foot prints of these two religions can be still witnessed in the township.
Islam was introduced to Ilayangudi during the 6th and 7th century by Arab traders. Now majority of the people living here are Muslims. The old Muslim community of this town is engaged in different trades such as textile weaving, transportation and plantation of betel leaves.
Ilayangudi is 25 km from Karaikudi and 70 km from Madurai. Karaikudi Junction Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
