Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) is located at
Darjeeling,
West Bengal, at an altitude of 6800 feet above sea level. It was established in 1954 with the personal initiative of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
The main object of the institute is to encourage and promote the science and art of mountaineering among its members. The institute has three wings – Training Wing, Museum and Administrative Wing. The museum here often shows films based on mountaineering and related sports.
Darjeeling Railway Station and Civil Enclave Bagdogra are the nearest railway station and airport respectively.
