Hawa Mahal

Palace of Breeze

Hawa Mahal is a raised pavilion designed to catch the breeze, located to the north of Jodha Bai's Palace in the Fatehpur Sikri complex. The walls of the chamber are made entirely in stone lattice work. This lattice work kept the interior cool, and at the same time ensured privacy for the ladies.

The Hawa Mahal built entirely of red sand stone is small but elegant, and is double storeyed. A number of square columns are there on the ground floor, which is open. Beautiful stone screens cover the top floor. Stairways are provided on the eastern and western side of the northern suite to approach this upper storey. The screens are exquisitely carved in different patterns.
