Harish Chandra Ghat is an important ghat located on the banks of the holy
Ganga River, in
Varanasi. This ghat is named after the legendary king Harish Chandra, who was known for his truthfulness and honesty. As the story goes, the king even worked in a cremation ground. This cremation ground is said to exist near the ghat.
Adjoining the ghat are numerous temples containing the idols of Harischandreshwara, Rohiteshwara, Adi Manikarnikeshwara and Vrddha Kedara. Stairs and platforms were added to the ghat during 1740 by a religious teacher named Narayana Diksit. The ghat is occasionally used by the pilgrims to take a dip in the holy waters of the Ganga.
