Gutor is a major festival in
Lahaul and Spiti District of
Himachal Pradesh. It is celebrated during the ninth or tenth or eleventh month of the Spiti calendar. The actual dates are fixed by the lamas. The objective of the festival is to protect the local populace from diseases through out the year.
The festival lasts for three days. The famous Devil Dance, which portrays the victory of good over evil, performed by the lamas on the fourth day is a major draw. Community drinking, eating, dancing and singing usually accompany the carnival. Thousands of people from the Spiti region gather for the event.
