The Gurung are primarily agriculturists. These tribals of Mongolian origin are found in
Sikkim. They profess
Hinduism and speak the language of Gurung Kura. The tribe is divided into two moieties, the Char Jat and Sora Jat. Now, the distinction between two branches disappeared.
The Gurungs in the urban areas generally follow Hindu rituals. In the early period, they use the services of the Lamas instead of Brahmins for all priestly functions. Nowadays, they also engage Brahmins for priestly functions.
