Also spelt Kuruti, and Kurudi, Gurudi is a mandatory ritual performed before Theeyattu, an art form in
Kerala.
This ritual is often associated with Bhadrakali worship and is conducted to appease the demonic spirits (Bhootha) who assist the goddess. This is a tantric ritual akin to a sacrifice.
Usually festivals in temples devoted to Durga or Bhadrakali conclude with the Gurudi Tarpana, or offering of Gurudi. In early days cocks were sacrificed, but now it is only symbolically done.
