Guru Dutt Shiv Shankar Padukone, popularly known as Guru Dutt, the famous director and actor was born on 9th July 1925 in
Mangalore,
Karnataka. He worked as a telephone operator before embarking on his career as an actor and director in 1944. He got a break as a choreographer with the film Hum ek Hain (1946 ), which launched friend and actor
Dev Anand. His first big break as a director came with the success of the film Baazi which was a trendsetter. The film was a forerunner of the numerous crime movies that appeared in Hindi in the 1950's. He married Geeta Roy, later Geeta Dutt, on the 26th of May,1953.
He also proved his mettle as an actor by playing as hero in films with a style of his own. Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudvin Ka Chand, and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam are other films that established his reputation. His brilliant career came to a premature end with his suicide in 1964, which is an irreplaceable loss for Indian cinema.
