A tributary of the Indus River, Gurtang River originates from a glacier on the southern slopes of the
Ladakh region in
Jammu and Kashmir. It then flows down the Indus Valley, and merges with the Indus River.
The surrounding features are hanging valleys, moraines and cirques. Due to its high elevation (4,200 m) and location in the shade of the Himalayas, the area is devoid of vegetation.
