Government Institute of Cottage Industry is located at zero point, few km uphill from the main
Gangtok town. Established in 1957, its purpose is to promote the manufacture and sale of local handicrafts, carpets and furniture. The emporium at the institute sells handicrafts,
Thangkas, hand carved foldable wooden tables known as Choktsees and exquisitely woven woolen carpets, masks and dolls.
Other products include variegated appliqué work, batiks, intricate carved Sikkimese tables, hand-painted masks, lamp-stands, shade and bamboo-craft, esoteric masks, flashing silks, opulent brocade and embroidered boots.
