Gour is a town located in
Malda District of
West Bengal. Spread across a landscape of lush paddy fields, it lies about 16 km south of
Malda on the border with Bangladesh. Gour was the erstwhile capital of ancient Bengal during the reign of King Shashanka.
The place is renowned for several large tanks. Bara Sagar Tank (almost 1500 m) built by Ballal Sen in 1126 is a notable among them. Muslim monuments dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries are the other highlights here.
Malda Town Railway Station is the nearest major railhead, 16 km to the north. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Kolkatais the nearest international airport.
