Gotmar Fair

Gotmar Fair (also Gotmar Mela) is a large fair held at Pandhurna, about 65 km from Chhindwara, on the banks of the river Jam, in Madhya Pradesh. The festivity begins from the second day of the month Bhadrapada to new moon day of the month (August-September).

The villagers of Savargaon and Pandhurna throng either bank of the river during this fair and a long tree is erected in the middle of the river with a flag at its very top. The villagers then start pelting stones ('Got') at the persons of the opposite village, who try to cross into the mid of the river and remove the flag on top of the tree trunk. The village, whose occupant wins in removing the flag, is considered triumphant. The people declaim the mantras; in the sacred name of Maa Durgaji, during whole these activities.

Large number of people from all over the district comes here to see this special event.
