Located at 18 kms south-east of
Berhampur, Gopalpur-on-sea was a prominent trading port during the days of the British
East India Company. The crumbling walls and pillars and the light house stand witness to the old port. Dubbed as the `best beach resort in Orissa’ by the Cognoscenti Magazine, this lovely laidback seaport village has been transformed into one of the prettiest beach resorts in India. Its languorous beach with coconut groves, casuarina coppices, and gentle sand dunes lie deserted for miles. The beach resort offers excellent facilities for surfing, surge-swimming, sailing, and sun-bathing. It is also famous for the wonderful seafood.
Though a year-round destination, the best time to visit this place is from October to April. The temperatures range from a summer high of 35°C to a winter low of 16°C. Gopalpur is well connected to other parts of Orissa by road and rail.
