The father of Tamil Music Renaissance, Gopalakrishna Bharati lived during the 19th century in Thanjavur of Tamil Nadu. An exponent in Hindustani music, he has to his credit a number of kritis. Nandanar, a famous Tamil musical opera portraying the story of a Shaivite saint, is his contribution. Varugalamo, Varuvaro and Enneramum are his other popular compositions.
An ardent devotee of Lord Nataraja, he mastered Vedas under the tutelage of Govinda Yati. Most of his compositions contain devotional and social themes.
