Gommateshwara Statue




Gommateshwara Statue stands on top of a hill located in a village called Sravanabelagola, 160 km from Bangalore, in Karnataka. The statue is 58 foot tall made of granite statue dedicated to the Jain Saint Gommateshwara. Steps carved on the rocky slope lead up to the statue. This sculpture was carved nearly a thousand year ago by the local ruler King Rachamalla of the Ganga dynasty, who was a great patron of Jainism. Saint Gommateshwara is depicted as standing in penance. The distinguishing feature, as in any statue of Saint Gommateshwara, is the creeper growing around his legs. Saint Gommateshwara is worshipped only in south India.
