Goindwal is situated near the beautiful city of
Amritsar in
Punjab, on the banks of the
river Beas. The township was built by Gobind, a disciple of
Guru Angad Dev. It is regarded as the center of
Moksha. Goindwal was the headquarters of Guru Amar Das (1479-1574), the third Guru of the Sikhs. Guru Amar Das had once organized a center for Sikh teaching at this place. The important attraction is the Baoli, the well built down 84 steps. It is said that the reciting of Jap Ji Sahib, while climbing up each step of the well after a purified bath, will set one free from the cycles of life and death. Thus this place has become sacred to both
Hindus and Sikhs.
