Ghalib Academy is situated opposite to the Qawwali hall of the holy shrine of Hazrat Khwaja Nizam Uddin Aulia in the by-lane of
Nizamuddin, in
Delhi. The academy was established as a `literary and cultural' center in 1969 by Dr
Zakir Hussain, the third president of the Indian Republic. Ghalib Academy is dedicated to
Mirza Ghalib, the court poet of the last
Mughal Emperor
Bahadur Shah Zafar.
The academy is decorated with ornamental canopies and ornamentations with delicate fretwork along with modern adaptations. The academy is equipped with an auditorium, an art gallery, museum and a well stocked library. The museum displays a statue of Mirza Ghalib, photographs, books and other important documents of his time. The library contains a collection of his poems and other contemporary poets.
The academy also conducts classes in Urdu calligraphy and Urdu typewriting.
Ghalib Academy is open all days, except on Sundays, from 11:00 to 18:00 hrs.
