Rajasthan is renowned for its unique style of painting called Gemstone Painting. This painting derives its name from the actual use of gemstone in it.
Powder or grains of precious and semi-precious stones are used for filling the outlines of an image. No colors are employed. The required colors are provided by the stones themselves. While white or pale colored stones are used for the human face, stones of other shades are used for the dresses, animals and other elements. Apart from gems, gold and silver are used for depicting the ornaments in the paintings.
These paintings generally contain women with birds, patterns derived from
Mughal art and scenes borrowed from the life of Lord Krishna. Other popular motifs are ‘ragini’ (classical music modes), gods and goddesses.
