Ganjam, the erstwhile capital and port of the
Ganjam District, is an old town in
Orissa. This town is situated on the coast of Bay of Bengal. It is about 10 km from
Chhatrapur (the present administrative headquarters) and 167 km from
Bhubaneswar.
Ganjam derived its name from ‘Ganja Muhana’. The word ‘Ganja’ means a market or trading place. ‘Muhana’ means the mouth of river at sea. Thus the name literally means a trading place at the confluence of river with sea.
Major points of attraction in and around Ganjam include Rushikulya Sea Turtle Rookery and Potagarh Fort. Gopalpur-On-Sea is just 8 km away.
Ganjam Railway Station, served by the South Eastern Railways, is on the Visakhapatnam with Khordha rail line.
