Gahirmatha Beach, situated in
Orissa, is along the coast of
Bay of Bengal. This 35 km long Gahirmatha coast is the world’s largest rookery of Olive Ridley sea turtles. The beach has big and small estuarine ecosystems, filled with thick mangrove vegetation that makes it an ideal place for mating, nesting, and hatching for the Olive Ridley sea turtles.
Olive Ridley sea turtles come here to nest and to lay eggs between the months of December and February every year. During these months fishing and allied activities are banned here. Also these areas have been declared as the Marine Turtle Sanctuary.
