Gada Bhatta

Gada Bhatta is a festival celebrated in Jammu and Kashmir during the Hindu month of Paush (December-January). ‘Gada Bhatta’ literally means fish and cooked rice. During the dark fortnight of this month, fish is specially prepared during Tuesday or Saturday and friends and relatives are invited for dinner.

Fish and rice is first offered to the ‘graha devata’ (house deity). The plate is covered with an inverted basket and a glass of water is placed near it. These offerings for the deity are placed in a clean room called ‘kaeni’ on the top floor. After placing the offerings, the feast is held.
