About 66% of Indian Railways' earnings is obtained from freight trains. For better capacity utilization and increased output, Indian Railways introduced the Freight Operation Information System (FOIS). This integrated information and management system helps to control and monitor various activities in freight operations. It also helps the freight operators to check the position of goods consigned until it reaches the destination.
Southern Railways was the first railway zone in India to implement the FOIS. The computerized FOIS covers almost the entire Indian Railways network.
